Treemendous York is a small group of volunteers supported by City of York Council committed to planting as many trees as possible in our area. Since 2010 we have planted some 100,000 woodland and hedge trees and are determined to increase our efforts in view of the essential role of trees, in combating the looming climate crisis.
Recently we have found a way of cooperating with firms and companies who appreciate the value to both themselves and the environment of creating new woodland areas. The basic formula we have adopted, and which is always open to adaptation to specific needs, is:
- The company gives us an idea of the budget and possible timing
- Treemendous finds a site - possibly on one of the University sites, such as Kimberlow Hill, Campus East.
- Treemendous advise on species and size of saplings with most environmentally protection shelters available, and arrange procurement & delivery
- Company recruits volunteers and we agree a date for planting, between early November and late March. Experience of volunteers is useful but not necessary, enthusiasm usually automatic
- Together we plan publicity campaign for project:
- We inform company of planting event: place, date, time, tools
- We coordinate the event
- We remind company of a commitment to simple routine maintenance, which gives continuity to volunteer involvement and interest.
We could include at any point a talk/presentation to the company, or just to volunteers, about the value of trees, such as:
- Carbon capture and storage
- Production of oxygen - cleaner air
- Increase in biodiversity and wildlife
- Physical products: timber, fuel, medicine
- Flood reduction
- Healthy environment for recreation and recuperation
- Physical and psychological benefits of “forest bathing”
The company would show their commitment to reducing their carbon footprint, if not to ‘saving the planet’. Their green credentials would thus be obvious and genuine.
